Around this time of year, I often have people ask me what sorts of last minute presents would be perfect for the foodies in their lives. I know that many of us are strapped for cash around the holidays, which is why I came up with this list of really useful gifts under $10 that any chef or home cook would love to receive.
Every image is clickable and will take you directly to Amazon for purchase, and almost all of these tools and ingredients have been tested by me over the years… most of them are daily staples in my kitchen and pantry!
20. Maldon Sea Salt
Give them a new box of their favorite finishing salt! Perfect for the ingredient-obsessed chef in your family, or anyone who loves to cook (or just eat.)
19. Bamboo Salt Box
Of course, they’re going to need something to put that big flaky salt in. A salt box like this is a beautiful addition to anyone’s kitchen, and will keep their favorite seasoning within arm’s reach.
If your favorite foodie is a baker, they will love you for this thoughtful gift! Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla Beans are very distinct, with a flavor and aroma profile unlike any other vanilla bean. There’s no doubt that they’ll find joy in using these to make vanilla sugar, homemade vanilla extract, or the best vanilla ice cream they’ve ever had.
17. Nanami(shichimi) Togarashi Chili Pepper Seasoning 3pk
Add a little spice to their desk lunch life with this delicious sodium free blend of spices. Great on everything from grilled meats and rice to noodles and soups, they’ll be happy you gave them more than one of these… unless you decide to keep a few for yourself. (I won’t tell.)
This sharp little paring knife will be the only present under the tree that they reach for every day out of the year! The fine yet sturdy blade and not too precious pricing make it a veritable workhorse in the kitchen. Talk about the gift that keeps on giving.
15. Simply Bamboo 8″ Cutting Board
Most people don’t realize how often they’d use a cocktail cutting board until they have one. This is the perfect pairing to that paring knife, and makes slicing an apple for a snack (or limes for some beers!) so much easier than grabbing their giant cutting board to do the same task.
14. Messermeister Vegetable Peeler
Every chef can use a better peeler in the kitchen, and this one really takes the cake. With a perfectly sized handle and super-sharp swiveling blade, they’ll be peeling their way through pounds of potatoes in no time flat. It can even peel butternut squash! (This is seriously hands down my favorite peeler EVER.)
13. Rayas Kitchen Zester Grater
A good zester is that little kitchen gadget that no one knows they need- until they have one. They’ll smile every time they grab it to effortlessly grate citrus zest, chocolate, hard cheeses… even nutmeg, ginger, or garlic! And the protective cover means it’ll stay sharp, even when it’s stored in a drawer with other tools.
12. Nature’s Kitchen Stainless Steel Grater
Forget the bulky box graters of the past- this handy handheld grater will be the only one they reach for. Perfect for coarsely grating veggies or cheese directly onto their quesadilla, and the dishwasher safe stainless steel design makes cleanup is a breeze.
11. Kitchen Active Spiralizer
Help them stick to their New Year’s Resolution and have fun in the kitchen at the same time! This little gadget will make them oodles of “zoodles” (zucchini noodles) that taste great while helping them get more servings of vegetables per day.
10. Hario Cloth Coffee Filter
Upgrade the morning routine of the coffee lover in your life. These fabric filters not only help save the planet, but make their pour-over coffee taste that much sweeter- really! (The reason? No paper glues or bleach.)
9. Flour Sack Towels 3pk
Yeah I know what you’re probably thinking- TOWELS? WHAT A LAME GIFT. But these may actually be the best present you never thought about buying anyone. Why? They can strain stock or homemade yogurt as effortlessly as they dry wine glasses without leaving a trace of lint, are more durable than cheesecloth and machine washable, and will save them tons of money on paper towels. Trust.
8. Norpro Stainless Steel Wide Mouth Funnel with Silicon Strainer
This little funnel is AWSOME for anyone who makes a lot of stock or broth (or homemade infusions.) It also does double duty in canning, helping the prepper in your family clean up less spills in the process. (You can even use it in a pinch with #10 to make pour-over coffee!)
7. Starpack Premium Silicone Kitchen Tongs, 9″ or 12″
They won’t have to worry about scratching the surface of their favorite cookware while flipping food after you give them these for Christmas! High heat silicone tips means that they can take these from stovetop to outdoor grill with ease. If the home cook on your list uses nonstick pans or enameled cast iron, these tongs are a MUST in their kitchen.
6. Surgical Stainless Steel 10″ Tongs
Up your favorite foodie’s presentation game with these fine tipped tongs. Perfect for delicate and precise work, they’ll be arranging Instagram-worthy plates in no time.
5. Rubbermaid 9.5″ Commercial High Heat Scraper
If your budding home chef has melted every spatula in the cabinet, you need to get them this one. While the Rubbermaid scraper is a bit more rigid than silicon versions, it will withstand heat up to 500ºF, and will never scratch their favorite cookware.
4. Winco 6.5″ Blade Fish Spatula
Does the cook on your list eats a lot of eggs or fish? This spatula will be the perfect addition to their kitchen! The finely angled edge makes getting under delicate food items a breeze, and the wooden handle means it won’t melt when exposed to higher heat.
3. Eddingtons Italian Olive Wood Spatula
Need to extend someone an olive branch in an extremely useful form? Every cook needs a great wooden utensil in their kitchen, and this spatula is as beautiful as it is functional. It’s perfect for making stir-fry, and they won’t worry about scratching the bottom of their pans when scraping stuck food off either.
2. John Boos Butcher Block Board Cream
Most cooks don’t even realize that the wood in the kitchen requires a little TLC every now and then- help them extend the life of their favorite tools by giving them this. For the chef who has everything, or just doesn’t need more “stuff”: this little tube of butcher block cream will be a lifesaver for their wooden cooking utensils and cutting boards.
1. Forge Coffee’s Organic Hold Fast Espresso
The only gift idea on this list that isn’t on Amazon, but if the person you’re shopping for is a coffee aficionado, this bag of beans will change their life. Hold Fast Espresso is a bold and potent balance of organic beans from South America, Central America, and Indonesia. The character of Hold Fast is big chocolate, blackberry, and cane sugar. (It’s an amazing coffee crafted in small batches in Los Angeles, and one that I’ve been a fan of for a very long time. Great as a pour-over too!)
California Olive Ranch Everyday Extra Virgin Olive Oil
While it isn’t in the Under $10 category online, you can often find it on sale under $10 at your local big box grocery. California Olive Ranch cold presses their award winning 100% California grown olives within hours of picking for a fresher taste, and it is seriously a pantry staple in my house. (Next to Forge Coffee, this may be my favorite thing to give to anyone I have trouble shopping for!)
Hope this list gave you last minute shoppers a few great ideas to finish rounding up gifts! In full disclosure, all links to Amazon are affiliate links, and by shopping through them you help keep this blog online and encourage me to continue doing what I do best.
